Halving food waste
In partnership with WRAP, we have signed up to our own roadmap to target food waste reductions across our operations, as well as prevent crop and food waste across the UK’s agriculture industry.
We have also been working with customers on product speciality utilisation, ensuring we are delivering on quality and minimising food waste wherever possible. In addition, to help us achieve this, we have hired a designated role into our team who is responsible for measuring and feeding back results across the business and wider supply chain to ensure we are not supporting waste and our waste recycling system is implemented across all sites.
Throughout the year, we partner with charities such as Crisis and work with other agencies to utilise our waste crops if needed. In the past, our leftover produce has been used in pet food, processing and livestock feed.
We work closely with NIAB to help reduce food waste and overcome key agricultural challenges such as food security, sustainable resources, climate change, health and nutrition and biodiversity and aesthetics.
Water security
The Courtauld 2030 Water Roadmap sets out a vision and key pathways to address the challenges we collectively face in protecting critical water resources for food supply, for nature and for local communities. As part of this, we are committed to delivering the Courtauld Commitment 2030 water target that 50% of the UK’s fresh food is sourced from areas with sustainable water management.
To help achieve this, we have signed up to the WRAP Roadmap Towards Water Security and have implemented a series of actions to manage water levels more efficiently across our organisation. One example is switching from water guns to booms which saves water, energy and money. Another is our water filtration water systems at Yaxley and Isleham which clean and aerate water that gets used back into the facility so that we can wash carrots and further minimise water waste.
